Set Up Self Service Password Reset

About Self Service Password Reset

SSPR will be available for UMass Amherst students soon. Faculty and staff will get SSPR in 2027. Stay tuned for more information.

Self Service Password Reset (SSPR) will allow campus community members to more easily change or reset their IT account password by going to passwordreset.microsoftonline.com. This password reset method can be used once every 24 hours. The existing password reset options in SPIRE will remain available.

Set Up SSPR

After SSPR has been enabled for your account, there are several dialogs you may see when logging into IT services (e.g. SPIRE) which prompt you to set up required authentication and recovery options.

Add an email address

If you have only one SSPR-compatible MFA method set up, you will be prompted to add a non-UMass email address for account recovery, or to select Other options to add a sign-in method.

We recommend adding a non-UMass email address instead of selecting Phone as a sign-in method. The email address you enter will only be used for account recovery, will not be used for MFA, and will not be listed publicly. Microsoft will remove SMS and voice call as MFA method options in February 2027.

  1. Enter your non-UMass email address and click Next.
  2. Check your email for a verification code.
Look for a message with the subject University of Massachusetts Account Email Verification Code.

Let's keep your account secure

If you do not have two SSPR-compatible multifactor authentication methods set up, you will see a dialog titled Let’s keep your account secure.

Click Next to begin setting up one of the available SSPR-compatible MFA methods.
For detailed instructions, and more about supported MFA options, see Multifactor Authentication at UMass Amherst.

We advise against selecting Phone as a sign-in method. Microsoft will remove SMS and voice call as MFA method options in February 2027.
