Schedule Builder is the web-based schedule planner platform used by students to make any changes to their schedule, including adding, dropping, swapping, and editing their classes.
Opening Schedule Builder
- Log in to Spire at spire.umass.edu using your NetID and password.
- If you do not remember your credentials, contact the IT Department by either calling (413) 545-9400 between 8:30am-4:45pm Monday-Friday or visit the IT Service Desk in the Campus Center from 8:30am-7:45pm Monday-Friday.
- Go to the
Manage Classes tab on the Spire home page. - On the left-hand menu, click on the
Add, Drop & Edit Classes dropdown. - Choose Schedule Builder.
This will open Schedule Builder in a new tab. Select the academic term you want to add classes for and click the Save and Continue button.
Choosing Classes
In schedule builder, click on the Add Course button as shown in the image below.

There are five ways you can add classes on Schedule Builder:
By Subject, By Rap/Tap/HLC, By Gen Ed, and By Instructor:

- For Rap/Tap/HLC and Gen Ed, select the attribute(s) for the class you plan to take. Note that you can choose multiple attributes.
- Choose a subject and course from the two dropdown menus.
- When you select a class, more information about it will be shown below.
- If you wish to take the course, click on the Add Course button on the bottom right.

By Class #:

- If you already know the class number of the course you wish to take, enter it here.
- Else, search for a class using the Class Search, Add & Enroll, select the section based on the timings and instructor, and copy the five-digit course number which is written under the Class column.

- Paste this number into schedule builder and click Add Course.
Once you have added the courses this way, click Build schedule located on the top bar to go back to the main page. Here, you’ll see that the courses you have added are under the Courses section.
Building a Schedule
- Choose the courses you want to add to your schedule by checking the checkboxes next to each class.
- If you want to choose a specific section of a course, click on the Sections button next to the desired course, and check/uncheck the available sections.

- Scroll down to the Schedules section and click the Generate Schedule button. This will generate any number of potential schedules based on the courses you have selected. If there are time conflicts with any of the chosen courses, it will mention exactly which courses are conflicting. Choose a different section/class to replace the one causing the conflict and click generate schedule again.
Comparing Schedules
- If there is more than one schedule generated, you can choose any combination of the generated schedules by checking the checkbox next to the schedules and clicking the Compare button at the top.

- Once you have chosen the schedule you like, click View to open the schedule and click the Send to Shopping Cart button at the top.

Adding a Class
- Click on the Shopping Cart tab located on the top bar.
- Once you have confirmed that you added the classes you want to take, click the Register button at the top right. This will register you for your classes, unless you are ineligible to take any of the courses.
