Badges Tool in Canvas/Catalog

There is a Badges tool available in Canvas and Catalog that you could use for automatically generating and awarding students based on their course completion.

Create a Badgr Account

If you are going to be the ‘person/department’ who creates and manages the badges, then you need to create an account at https://badgr.com/auth/signup.

Create an ‘Issuer’

Step 1: Once you have created your account, the page will reload, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click on View Canvas Badges Backpack.
Step 2: On the left top tab, click on Issuers.
Step 3: Click on Create issuer.
Step 4: Fill in the blanks to create the issuer account. Click on the Save button.
Step 5: The page will reload, you will be able to ‘create badge’ now.
Step 6: You can try clicking on the design badge to create your own badge icon.
Step 7: For the description, you can start with ‘This badge proves that (...)’.
Step 8: For the meeting criteria, you can start with ‘You have accomplished…’
 
Note: whoever created the ‘Issuer’, the ‘Issuer email will be set as the creator’s email address’, other owners of the issuer are able to change the email address to their own.

Enable Badge and Canvas/Catalog Integration:

To connect the issuer with your Canvas course:

Step 1: Open your Canvas course, and click on Badges on the course navigation menu on the left side.

Step 2: Input the email you use for your badgr account.

Step 3: Once you have entered the verification code and login, you will be able to select the issuer that you have control of and want to use.

Step 4: On the Setup page, click on the Add badge button.

Step 5: You will be able to select the badge that you created. Select the relevant requirements for the badge to be automatically rewarded to students who have met the completion criteria.

Note: To make completion of a specific activity or module the criteria for receiving the badge, you must turn on the ‘Requirement’ within the module first.

To do so: Go to the Module’s page, locate the specific module, click on the three dots on the right top corner, and select Edit. Click on Requirement. Specify the requirements.

Step 6: Don’t forget to click on the Save button.

Can an issuer have multiple owners?

Yes.

Step 1: log into your badgr account.

Step 2: Click on Issuer on the top tab.

Step 3: Locate the issuer that you want to add ‘contributors’ or ‘owners’.

Step 4: Click on the name of the issuer.

Step 5: Click on the Staff tab right below the issuer picture.

Step 6: Click on the Add staff button to add ‘contributors’ or ‘owners’ or ‘users’ to the issuer.

What do Badges look like to my students?

Before they accomplish the criteria, every time they click on Badges in Canvas/Catalog:
