Information for Students Leaving UMass Amherst


UMass Amherst graduates and students who leave the university in good standing have no-cost access to:

The timer on account deactivation begins at the end of the last academic session you were actively enrolled in. Example: A student who finished their last classes in December 2028 and graduated in February 2029 could expect to lose access to their University E-mail in December 2029, not February 2030.

Special Extensions
Account services are automatically extended for members of the Armed Forces who were active students or employees at the time of their deployment. The extension is only valid for the duration of these individuals' active duty.

 



Whether you are graduating or simply taking the next semester off, consider these items before leaving campus:

Download / Back up Your Files

Make copies of all the important files you have stored using one of our services. These may include University Google Mail emails, Google Drive files, and Google Calendar data.

 

Switch Accounts to Personal Email

If you have registered any non-UMass accounts (e.g. social media, online shopping, banking, etc.) using your UMass Amherst email address, edit your accounts with those services to use a non-UMass email address.

 

Download Important Emails

Upon account deactivation, your emails will be deleted. Follow the steps below to hold onto these important emails by using a mail client such as Microsoft Outlook or Apple Mail.

Get a Transcript

Use SPIRE to order a transcript, or get a printed copy sent to you. Details can be found here.

Traveling after graduation?

Make sure your UMass Amherst account is travel-ready before you leave - set up the Microsoft Authenticator app. 
App-based two-step login improves security - and makes sure you can still access your account, even if you lose phone service. 
Step-by step instructions & video guides

  1. Install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device. 
  2. Tap Add work or school account.
  3. Enter your netID@umass.edu and password

 


 

Update your Contact Information

Update your contact information in SPIRE, including your mailing address and email address. These are the addresses that the University will use to send you all future communications, including your diploma.

Note: Campus Alerts subscribers who are temporarily leaving the University are encouraged to unsubscribe (simply remove your cell phone number from the Cell Phone Info page, and click Save). Graduating students are automatically unsubscribed.

 

Save your New SPIRE Logon Information

In the next six months, we’ll send your new SPIRE logon information to your University email address. Use this information to access SPIRE after your IT Account is de-activated (to print more transcripts, update your contact information, etc.).
