As an alternative, computing resources are available for use at the W.E.B. DuBois Library and the Science and Engineering Library. Here are the minimum and recommended specifications to consider when choosing a laptop.
Minimum Specifications
These specifications are suitable for students who already own a laptop and plan to bring it to campus:
Operating System:
- Windows: Windows 10 Home (minimum) or Windows 10 Pro (recommended). Windows 10 end of life support is October, 2025.
- Mac: macOS 10.14 (minimum) or macOS 10.15 or higher (recommended). If you’re considering a Mac, consult your program advisor first, as some classes may require Windows-only software.
Processor:
- Minimum: Intel Core i5 processor or Apple M2 for macOS devices.
- Recommended: Intel Core Ultra i5 processor or Apple M3 for macOS devices.
Memory (RAM):
- Minimum: 8 GB RAM.
- Recommended: 16 GB RAM.
Storage (Hard Drive):
- Minimum: 256 GB (avoid purchasing a 128 GB hard drive).
- Recommended: 512 GB or higher.
Graphics Card:
- Minimum: 512 MB video memory or higher (integrated cards are acceptable). If you are enrolled in a program that utilizes graphics heavy software, consult with your advisor first.
Warranty:
- Minimum: standard vendor warranty
- Recommended: 4-year parts and labor warranty (on-site service is strongly recommended).
- Consider accidental damage coverage for breakage and liquid spills.
Recommended Specifications
If you’re purchasing a new laptop, aim for the following specifications:

- Windows: Windows 11 Pro.
- Mac: most current macOS.
Processor:
- Recommended: Intel Core Ultra i5 processor or Apple M3 for macOS.
Memory (RAM):
Storage (Hard Drive):
- Recommended: 512 GB or higher.

- Recommended: extended 4-year parts and labor warranty (on-site service is strongly recommended).
