Students often benefit from getting feedback on drafts of their work. Using Assignments, you can allow students to submit drafts of their work in a single activity. You might choose to do this if an assignment requires multiple stages of drafting, has a reflection component, or requires supplemental materials.
Allow multiple uploaded files
Why you might enable this setting: Effectively, this could allow a student to submit both an initial draft of an assignment as well as a revised draft to the same Moodle Assignment. This could also be used to allow a student to submit a writing assignment and a reflection on that writing together.
Note: If you intend to have students submit a first draft with other drafts in the same Moodle Assignment during an extended period of time using this method, it is important to set a due date that corresponds with when you would like the last draft to be due rather than the first draft, so as to avoid any complications with student submissions.
- On your course page, click Turn editing on (green pencil icon

, top right). - Locate the Assignment activity you want to set up with drafts and click Edit (at right), then from the Edit drop-down menu, select Edit settings. The Edit settings page opens.
- Under the Submission types heading, from the Maximum number of uploaded files drop-down menu, select a number other than one. The number you choose is the number of drafts, including the final draft, that the assignment will accept.
- Click Save and return to course.
Allow multiple uploaded files & manually monitor them
Why you might enable this setting: If you want to manage the drafting process for a Moodle Assignment by approving each draft before a student can submit another.
- On your course page, click Turn editing on (green pencil icon

, top right). - Locate the Assignment activity you want to set up with drafts and click Edit (at right), then from the Edit drop-down menu, select Edit settings. The activity's settings page opens.

Allow multiple uploaded files to be accepted until a student receives a passing grade
Why you might enable this setting: If you want students to submit drafts until they receive grades that meet the passing grade criteria you have determined in an activity or grade item's settings in the Moodle gradebook. This might be especially useful if revision and drafting are integral parts of your course.
- On your course page, click Turn editing on (green pencil icon

, top right). - Locate the Assignment activity you want to set up with drafts and click Edit, then from the Edit drop-down menu, select Edit settings. The activity's settings page opens.
