If you use a domain-joined Windows computer, you need to be careful about where you store large files. While it is ok to temporarily store large files anywhere, be sure to move them to an appropriate location before you log off. Storing very large files (e.g., SAS download) in an incorrect location can drastically increase the time it takes to log on and off of a domain-joined machine.

Is my computer domain-joined?

Using Windows 7 & 8:

Right-click Computer and then select Properties. Scroll down to Computer name, domain and workgroup settings. Look at the entry in Domain field. If it says "xxxxxxx.ads.umass.edu" (where "xxxxxx" stands for a domain name), your computer is domain-joined.

Note: All users using Windows XP or Vista are advised to upgrade to a newer operating system (Windows 7 or 8).

Where can I safely store large files?

You can safely store large files almost anywhere on your C:\ drive, except the following:

• Desktop
• Libraries
• Anywhere in C:\Users\%username% folder (%username% stands for your logon username)

Note: Your browser may automatically save to one of the above locations. Often the browser saves to C:\Users\%username%\downloads folder. If that happens, drag the downloaded file to a different folder on your C:\ drive. Make sure a copy does not remain in the original location, or on your Desktop. Be sure to do this before you log off.
