This document outlines the UMass Amherst EchoVideo lecture recording policy.*
- Instructors using EchoVideo at UMass are expected to read the UMass Amherst EchoVideo lecture recording policy before using the EchoVideo service.
- Intellectual Property rights of the recorded material are in accordance with the UMass Amherst Intellectual Property Policy.
- Instructors must request a new EchoVideo course section each semester they teach a class and want to use EchoVideo.
- No class will be recorded without the express consent of the instructor, as indicated by the completion of a lecture capture request form.
- INSTRUCTORS MUST NOTIFY STUDENTS THAT LECTURES ARE BEING RECORDED. Every effort is made to avoid capturing students' likenesses, as the system is designed to capture the instructor and the front of the classroom. However, students' audio participation may be recorded.
- Depending on how recordings are created or edited, they may constitute educational records that are protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Instructors agree to follow acceptable practices for utilizing video and audio recordings in the classroom setting. For more, see our Lecture Capture and FERPA page.
- EchoVideo classroom capture will not be used during final exam periods as an academic honesty enforcement tool.
- Lecture recordings will be restricted to UMass Amherst students via the Canvas or Moodle learning tool integration (LTI). Other access controls, such as publicly available recording links, are available at the discretion of the instructor.
- All content will be delivered using streaming technology. By default, viewers cannot download recordings. Instructors, however, can manually enable downloading of recordings.
- Content recorded by non-UMass Amherst instructors and staff for delivery outside of the UMass Amherst Canvas or Moodle LTI will be removed from the EchoVideo system after 2 months (approximately 60 days). Arrangements can be made with authorized operator of the UMass Amherst EchoVideo system to download recordings for self-hosting.
- Faculty or an authorized operator are expected to edit any recording to remove undesired material or conversations. UMass IT does not provide editing services.
- At any time, instructors may download recordings from the EchoVideo server for backup or long-term storage purposes.
- Use of the EchoVideo Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) feature at UMass Amherst may not be used to meet a disability accommodation.
*By using EchoVideo at UMass Amherst, you agree to the Lecture Capture Recording Policy. UMass Amherst reserves the right to change, modify, add or remove portions of this policy, at any time. It is your responsibility to check this Lecture Capture Recording Policy for changes.
