As part of its efforts toward LGBTQ+ inclusion, UMass Amherst gives you the option to indicate your gender identity and sexual orientation in SPIRE.

On your SPIRE Center, select the Profile tile. Under the Personal Information heading, select the Gender & Sexual Identity page.

This information helps us know the number of LGBTQ+ students at the University so that we can better tailor programs and services and better track campus diversity efforts.

• For first-year undergraduate students entering in the class of 2021 and later: gender identity and sexual orientation data are automatically retrieved from your voluntary responses on the Common Application (the UMass Amherst admissions form).
• For graduate students entering after Fall 2017: gender identity is retrieved from the graduate application.
• All other students: you are welcome to provide the data yourself.

You may update your information at any time.

All information will be kept confidential. Only offices that need to know your gender, such as for housing assignment, will have access to identifying information. Your sexual orientation is not individually identified, and aggregate data are shared only with authorized offices.
