What is eduroam?

eduroam (education roaming) is an encrypted, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. eduroam is UMass Amherst's secure and encrypted wireless network. eduroam also allows students, faculty, and staff from participating institutions to obtain wireless connectivity when visiting other participating institutions by simply opening their device. This makes connecting to the Internet easy and convenient when visiting participating institutions for conferences, research, or other reasons.

Who can use eduroam?

Any member of the University community with a valid IT Account NetID can use eduroam. They can also connect to participating institution's wireless network service as long as they configure eduroam on their device(s).

How do I configure my device(s) for eduroam?

Use the JoinNow setup wizard to set up your device for eduroam. You will need to enter your IT Account NetID and password during the setup process for most devices. Check our eduroam setup guides for step by step instructions.

When I enter my NetID in the JoinNow Welcome screen, it is auto appending "@umass.edu" to it. That is not my email address, should I change or delete it?

You must leave “@umass.edu” after your NetID. Appending @umass.edu is necessary to connect to the eduroam network both on- and off-campus. Note: This might not be your actual email address. Do not change it to match your email address.

Where can I find a map of eduroam hotspots at participating institutions?

Check the eduroam website for participating institutions in the US and abroad.

I’m planning a visit to a participating campus. How do I connect when I’m there?

It is strongly recommended that you configure your device for eduroam while on the UMass Amherst campus before you leave. Once you are at a participating campus, all you have to do is turn on your device and it will connect automatically!

How do I get help?

For any eduroam questions, contact the IT Help Center while you are still on campus. We will not be able to provide assistance once you are away. The IT Help Center does not provide support for eduroam for visitors from other institutions.

I deleted (messed up) my eduroam network profile. How do I reconfigure my device for eduroam again?

Simply re-run the JoinNow setup wizard. Make sure you append @umass.edu in the NetID field when configuring (e.g., jsmith@umass.edu). Note: You must use @umass.edu (which might not be your actual email address) for it to work on and off campus. If you continue to have problems, please contact the IT Help Center.

eduroam is not working at a participating institution. What can I do?

Simply re-run the JoinNow setup wizard. Make sure you use NetID@umass.edu for your username when configuring. Note: You must use @umass.edu (which might not be your actual email address) for it to work on and off campus. The IT Help Center at other institutions likely will not be able to help you troubleshoot your connection.

Where is eduroam available on the UMass Amherst campus?

Please see the campus Wireless Coverage Areas.

I'm graduating from the University. Can I still connect to eduroam after I leave?

As long as your IT Account NetID remains active, you can continue to connect to eduroam.

Is eduroam available at the other Five Colleges and other UMass campuses?

Check the eduroam website for participating institution in the US.

Where can I go for additional information?

Please see the eduroam website for news updates, and other relevant information.

UPDATE: Starting in June 2018, a new setup wizard replaced XpressConnect, making it even easier to connect to the eduroam wireless network.
